The third Writers of the Future Awards ceremony was held Friday, April 24, 1987 at the Windows on the World Restaurant atop the World Trade Center in New York City. Special guests for the event included legendary science fiction authors Isaac Asimov, Robert Silverberg, Roger Zelazny, Frederik Pohl, Larry Niven, Dr. Jerry Pournelle and Gene Wolfe, along with Star Wars actor Mark Hamill, editor Brian Thomsen (Warner Books) and DC Comics editor Julius Schwartz.
The cover for L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future Volume III sported a gorgeous Frank Frazetta cover painting, the first of many Frazettas over the years.
A landmark for the third event was the institution of the writers’ workshop for the Contest winners, one of the most valued parts of the WotF prize. The first workshop was held in Sag Harbor, Long Island, New York, and was taught by Algis Budrys, Orson Scott Card and Tim Powers.
