I pasted the opening lines of A Certain Slant of Light to this https://talktotransformer.com/ to see how it developed Preston’s story. I think Preston’s was better, but damn, I’m going to be much more productive using this.
Walter walked slowly along the crumbling sidewalk. The last ten years had been difficult for him, and he'd recently decided that he'd had enough. His mother hadn't spoken to him in over a year, and it wasn't even that she was ill—she was on a strict schedule and had been for quite some time, but Walter had seen her only every few months during the week and once a month during the weekend, and now he could tell it was becoming increasingly difficult to keep up with.

He paused at a bus stop, and stopped in front of a girl with black hair and a black T-shirt. Walter's eyes swept over her body; she wore black jeans, a black sweatshirt, and black-rimmed glasses. Her tan skin had turned a slightly reddish-brown, as if it was the color of the leaves under his feet as he walked down the block.

She smiled at him, and her lips curved up in a small smile as she looked at him, her

hahahahaha…..it works and then it doesn't work:)….I just typed in the classic opening line....

It was a dark and stormy night.

A few weeks later, I had a call from a guy I'd known since high school. He and I would go to work together when I was in my mid-twenties, and we'd sometimes talk by phone. The day before I was supposed to fly to Seattle, he called to say he was going to Seattle.

"I'm staying over at the house of one of your friends," he said.

We ended up talking a bit, and I knew this was going to be something different from my life for the next year or so. I had made the decision in my mind that I would not be a professional football player, but I also knew that if I left, I'd be a failure.

"I can't imagine not having you by my side," I said. "We have to figure this out."

It would take a long time for me to trust him, but in the spring

It decided on a bit of fan fiction for me, completely unrelated to my opening prompt:

"Buffy, Willow and Xander find Spike and are about to try and find their way home, when a massive creature emerges from the Earth and the four are swallowed up by it.

Buffy is at the hospital and finds Willow in the bathroom. When she tries to ask her about the night before, she finds that Willow is now naked and with a new face. Buffy tells Willow that she is just a memory. Willow goes to confront Spike, telling him that Buffy is now gone."

I haven't seen Buffy. I hope they aren't spoilers. wotf001
