Did you try to enter online first (like me) only to find it close on you? That might be what happened. You can always email Joni if you don't hear by the time we get Semi's reporting.

Why is this odd? Well, one, I submitted on paper, so I'm not sure how it qualifies as a draft? And two, it came to an email address that wasn't on my paper submission.

Here's how this could have happened to me. It didn't, but maybe you did something similar? At one point, someone asked a question about the e-submit process; and I couldn't answer it without creating a new account. After that, I kept getting nudges to finish and submit. Is it possible you created an account just to explore and experiment?

Apparently KD hadn't made her final decisions, so it will be up to the new judge, whoever that is, to sort those out. Some of us are in for an even longer wait with stories in limbo (because the new judge might have wildly different tastes, so what might have been a maybe for KD could be a straight reject for new person).

@Martin - conceivable. Maybe even probable. It's just that I don't remember doing so. Of course, this could have been back as far as October, so maybe I just forgot?

And just to add spice to the info above re: KD hadn't picked Finalists... I would think that if they're sending out emails to the folks who never completed the submission process, that perhaps that indicates they're near the end of the judging? Seems kinda low priority, you know?

Wow Annie!

How crazy! Will keep fingers crossed for you (and anyone from here who finds themselves in this situation this quarter).

'Grats to all those who received HM's.

This was my first entry into WOTF, so naturally I was expecting a Finalist call. Just joking. Am happy with the HM - top 10% afterall right?

Good luck to everyone still waiting. wotf008

Just had a funny thought on the postal subs listed on Duotrope--there are only nine, and two of them are mine.

And I'm guessing two are Dustin's and two are Kary's. Anyone else here?

We might just be the paper subs (on duo--not the only ones in the contest, of course).

ETA: And congrats Deli and all the others who've heard since my last congrats.

It's awesome to break the top 10% your first time out!

Congrats, Deli.

Those acceptances aren't finalists who have been called. Just FYI. I highly doubt calls will be going out for a while judging from the email I got today. Apparently KD hadn't made her final decisions, so it will be up to the new judge, whoever that is, to sort those out. Some of us are in for an even longer wait with stories in limbo (because the new judge might have wildly different tastes, so what might have been a maybe for KD could be a straight reject for new person).

My final quarter is turning into an epic. Do not want.

I just got an email something like this. To be clear, it said:
1. There's a delay, a new judge has taken over
2. My story was placed by KD in the "hold" category
3. I'll be notified in the next month. (Wimper wotf005 )

This is what makes every quarter so fascinating! We have new rejectomancy and duotropery to ponder and no quarter is exactly like the previous.

The "hold" category is interesting. So, there could still be HMs coming out of that pile I imagine, but I'm hoping for all the forum goers that it means a semi or higher! But yeah, waiting another month in a "hold" pile is another few weeks to bite your nails, or whatever it is alligators have claws? 😉

Well, good luck to all those in the "hold" category!

So we've got six paper subs accounted for for sure.

And yes, what is this "hold" pile? Claw-chomp inducing indeed.

Preston usually does paper subs, but I don't know if he uses Duotrope. Maybe when he is on here next he will let us know.

And now a magical hold pile? Good luck Gator Gal! I'm going to go ahead and guess good news for that one.

Holding a Gator strikes me as a bit foolhardy. (And no, I do not exclude professional gator wrestlers in that judgment.)

Indeed. The "hold" pile probably means jaw taping, caging, and carting away into that special category A security rejection cell reserved for dangerous gators.

I too received a "hold."
I suspect we are seeing the inner workings of the contest. The hold is likely something that didn't get a straight R or HM, but needed further study. In my Q4 entry last year, the critique K.D. wrote that she went back and re-read it multiple times looking for the antagonists motivation. Likely I got the similar hold and then she went back to make sure what category it should go in.

She said they would wrap it up next month, so now I wait... wotf040

Completely understandable under the circumstances and I certainly wish K.D. were around to complete the judging, although I'm sure whoever takes the reigns will do a bang up job.

And what of Martin, and those e-subbers who are left and have heard nothing? At least, if you've heard something, Martin, you're keeping it to yourself. I tend to assume that Marina and the other paper subbers are simply in that self-imposed dark age into which they always plummet.

For paper sub's. The email said that the "hold" pile was put together while K.D. was working on paper subs. She may not have finished them. She said the holds would be resolved next month, so we are in for a wait.

Possibly KD held back the SHM/semi/finalist pile. But even if this is true, with a new judge I'm not so sure we can all be sure of getting at least a SHM. The new judge may not agree with all her choices, and give some of us HMs, or even rejections.

Congrats to all the HMs! (Or condolences, your choice.) As for the hold, I bet they're just giving themselves some extra leeway by saying a month. It could end up being much sooner. (Of course, this is just a total guess, but that's what I'd do in their place.)

This is ONLY a guess; but if I were running the contest, continuity would be an important goal for this quarter. It's about finishing K.D.'s work as best another judge can, not about second-guessing it.

A new coordinating judge can set his or her mark on the contest next quarter. This quarter is still K.D.'s quarter, at least in my mind.
