Amazed this thread is still active. If you want a book about the early days of Sci-Fi and the people who made it happen, "Astounding" by Alec Nevala-Lee delves into the pulp magazine and its authors, going in-depth into their lives, warts and all. It's both good and bad to find out the titans of early Sci-Fi were a bunch of nerds.

Speaking if which! Happy 4th of July and/or Thursday, as appropriate.

It's been so quiet I had to comment somewhere. The word lurch is the prompt.
Grab the granny gear and lurch forward slowly inch by inch.

Probably not me, but I'll help work toward it.

"Lose not the faith," the old man said. "The yung'uns may not respect the traditions, but in time they will come to learn the importance of whence we came."
"No," said the other. "You are alone now. The rest have passed. Shinier, brighter things. New traditions. The flame dies with you."
"I can't accept it. They will return. You will see."
"Please, come with us. There is still time."
"But 5,000--"
"--Was a dream, nothing more."
"No!" said the old man. "They will come. It will be."

I concur.

No, it's FIVE!
From Wikipedia:
Five is the third prime number. Because it can be written as 221 + 1, five is classified as a Fermat prime; therefore a regular polygon with 5 sides (a regular pentagon) is constructible with compass and unmarked straightedge. Five is the third Sophie Germain prime, the first safe prime, the third Catalan number, and the third Mersenne prime exponent. Five is the first Wilson prime and the third factorial prime, also an alternating factorial. Five is the first good prime. It is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1. It is also the only number that is part of more than one pair of twin primes. Five is a congruent number.
I totally know what all of that means. Frankly I was disappointed to learn five has no imaginary part. But knowing it is the first "good prime" is certainly important to me.
It's also the first digit in the coveted post 5,000 - coming soon to a thread near you!!
Edit: Just a thought. Does anyone know or is in touch with Tina Gowers? It would be really cool if the original starter of the thread were to honor us with post 5,000.

As a new(er) forumite, I keep seeing this thread and wondering... why is it still alive? But having looked at it, I see why. It's a tradition! It is encouraging to see posts with signatures saying, R, HM, SHM, SF, F, Winner!
...although, even more interesting is the fact that their honours are very rarely in that order.
Just scrolled the first 15 pages. They are full of winners that didn't know fate would shine on their careers.
Fate? All I remember was years and years of HARD WORK.
