Dustin, if you paper subbed, your probably good. Joni goes through each entry, or at least she used to before e-subs, and marks out anything that could disqualify an entrant.

Also remember that even Standard Manuscript Format is a guideline, not a true standard. Even back in the dark ages when we all had to use these ridiculous machines called typewriters, the vagaries of each machine meant that things like margins, fonts, line spacing, etc. meant that each writer's manuscript actually looked visibly distinctive from any other's. As long as you're basically doing it right, individual quirks aren't a problem.

Of course, it's best to follow the manuscript guidelines in the rules as much as possible, but I can't imagine you'd be disqualified because of how you formatted your page headers (unless, of course, you screwed up and left your name in there).

I'd say email Joni or ask KD on her SFF website to know for sure, the rest of us can only guess.

I'm going to have to disagree on asking KD. I just like to keep a clean separation there for the sake of blind judging. It's unlikely that yours was the only story out of thousands with a page numbers but no titles; but still, why take the chance. I'd stick with emailing Joni.

I wouldn't recommend asking KD, since if it wasn't something that would disqualify you, might knowing that you are the one with no title be sort of like having a name on it? (Even though there may be others that don't have the title as well). Asking Joni, on the other hand, should be okay, shouldn't it?

I did e-mail Joni.
I agree with the leniency of the SMF, but this is a rule.
I'm hoping it's more of a guideline.

The word *must* is what gets me. wotf018

Even if it's not a DQ, will it count against me? Like, man, this slacker can't follow the basics... To the R pile with you! (Consequently, if I do get rejected, I can totally blame this.)

Sigh.

My past entries were all done properly. Back when I was younger, and wiser.

I've taken the time this morning to go over all my MS, WotF or not, and put that footer in there. Certainly, I won't make this mistake again. wotf004

Well, at least we'll have an answer for this one soon enough. My recommendation - follow the rules. You'll sleep better.

Ops on asking KD. Always forget about the blind judging. I was thinking more of a general question about the change in the rules and how strictly will they be followed, but it sounds like they are still being lenient! Good!

This may have been answered elsewhere, but I've not seen it. I submitted for quarter one, but I've yet to hear anything. Can I go ahead and submit for q2? If so, what happens if I become one of the three winners? Does my q2 entry immediately become void? The rules say that winners are ineligible for further contest entries.

Go ahead and enter now. (!) If you win, Joni will remove your Q2 entry.

I had one of my vivid dreams last night. Incredibly detailed. Colour, clear defined events, and extensive dialogue - all that I remember with complete clarity.

A few times in the past, I've had dreams like this that have come true. (Of course I have had many more that haven't). I've never dreamt about writing before. But this dream was a press conference announcing the Q1 winners for WoTF.

I came second. Marina (a woman anyway, and I'm pretty sure it was Marina) came first, and a male was third. I spoke to Brad Torgersen for a moment before going up on the stage to sit besides Joni and the other winners, and we were presented to the waiting press - around thirty of them.

sigh - of course it's simply a dream - but is anyone changing their fantasy league based on this? I hope not.

Wait a second now....what color was her hair? How tall was she? How old was she?

Though I'd love to see Marina win. Hmmm...that third "male" winner: are you sure? Because my first passport, when I was 21, listed me as male. (Doh. Some silly fool at the passport processing center must have looked at my name rather than the information I'd filled in on my application form to make that call. The passport arrived too late to fix it before my flight to the Netherlands, so I donned my most manly attire and tried to speak in a gruff voice at passport control. Quite possibly they thought I was transgender, but fortunately in NL that's no reason to keep you out. I will note that I also made it back into the States without incident. Beaucoup avant-9/11.)

Perhaps we should all send you pictures of ourselves, so your next WOTF dream spouts forth a clear answer on the winners.

Hey guys, this is my first entry into WotF. But I'm sorta confused on my entry. I sent it in on Oct. 11th thinking I was entering the V.28 Q.4 contest, but I received this e-mail on the 13th:

Dear Contestant,

This is a note to let you know that your story has indeed been entered

in the 1st quarter of the 2012 Writers of the Future contest. Yes, we start

a bit early around here, only because way back in 1984 when this contest

started the very first quarter was in October. So we just rolled from there

and here we are, just starting the 29th year!

I'll start sending out results in December and we'll have winners in late

January. Keep updated on announcements on our blog which is on the

contest website. https://www.writersofthefuture.com .

Have a wonderful holiday season!

It states that I'm entered in Q.1 of V.29. So that's cool, I was mistaken about which quarter I was entering, but then it states results will be given in December - Late January. Isn't that Q.4? Obviously I haven't heard anything since Oct. 13th.

I submitted my entry on Dec 31, and the email also said “sending out results in December and we'll have winners in late January.” I think they forgot to change the form letter.

When that email came out, many of us (me included) assumed that meant they were ahead of schedule (for perhaps the first time ever) and could start sending out some rejections early in the process. While it's never pleasant when it's your story, some stories can be cleared away pretty easily.

I just recently looked back through last quarter and people had started receiving responses around the 20th of the month after the deadline. I'm guessing that since they're deep in planning the awards event right now, we won't see responses that early this quarter, though.

FWIW, I got this today:

This is a note to let you know that your Illustration has indeed been entered in the 1st quarter of the 2012 Illustrators of the Future contest. Yes, we start a bit early around here, only because way back in 1984 when this contest started the very first quarter was in October. So we just rolled from there and here we are now into the 29th year!

I'll start sending out results starting in May and we'll have winners in late May or early June. Keep updated on announcements on our blog which is on the contest website. https://www.writersofthefuture.com .

Please let me know that you got this message and feel free to ask any questions! Good Luck!

Best,
Joni Labaqui - Contest Director

Obviously, it's a form letter with "story" or "illustration" (which really should be "illustrations," but that would mess up the subject-verb agreement) inserted depending on which contest was entered. Ergo, it's entirely likely that when the form letter was set up for the writing contest, dates in which results were expected did not get updated. Based on how far behind IotF is with respect to WotF, the dates in today's letter look plausible to me, however, so it's entirely possible that early rejects are already going out on the writers' side...

(And before anyone worries, I entered IotF for the heck of it. I'm in no danger of any result except giving a coordinating judge a good chuckle.)

Why would anyone worry? That would be cool if you won both sides in the same year....Or either side. Maybe the judge needs a good chuckle? Either way, good luck!

I came second. Marina (a woman anyway, and I'm pretty sure it was Marina) came first, and a male was third.

Steve, it would be cool if your dreams came true! Then we could all bug you to dream about each of us winning.

And Grayson, doubting minds think alike. I too want to know what the woman looked like in the dream. Then I can get the chills when it matches a picture of Marina. I don't know what she looks like, but I'm betting she doesn't have lavender hair and a leather catsuit like her avatar suggests...but if you do, Marina, that's cool, totally cool.

wotf019 Want to know what's even better? The individual in my avatar is actually a guy. And extremely androgynous and pretty guy, but a guy none the less. I would put a link in here to the full image, but the artist's website is down right now.

I used to have that hair cut, and my favorite color is purple, but other than that...

That's the prettiest guy I've ever seen! I know a few guys like that who make me jealous with how much more beautiful they can be. It looks like your art style though. Do I remember you saying it was one of your drawings? I think I remember you saying that at one time.

I'm thinking I'm going to have to start using my twitter account. Mostly it collects dust and every few weeks I get a random person following me...which is humorous since I never have anything to follow. Facebook anyone?

ETA: I just saw you mention it was another artist work in your avatar...ok, so I was a little off..but it still looks like your style a bit to me.

I figured that must be what was going on. And your styles are still similar. I can see the same shapes of faces, expressions, composition, and line. The other artist has some awesome work, but I can see the influence in your work.

Purple hair and leather--might just be the inner you.
