Two years ago in Jibber Jabber - Q1 - 29...

The Gator has no need to write a little ditty for herself, Lewis Carroll already wrote one which does the job just fine:

How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!

How cheerfully he seems to grin
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!

The only one I can recite by heart. It amused my niece when she was younger wotf007

I would just like to remind people of a little story.

It started in the volume 29 quarter 1 thread. I had written a story I was very proud of and there was no reason for me to be too excited about it given my past performance in this contest (all rejections). I went to turn in my story on the day of the deadline around 8pm or so. The website closed for entries, but technically the deadline had not passed. Martin L. Shoemaker helped me find a post office that was open 24hrs close to our home and we got that entry in at 11:43 on New Years Eve. Martin proclaimed "You know what this means? This means that you now have to win!" We were both Finalists in that same quarter, but Martin did not win. As people maybe know, my story won the Grand Prize. The one that would not have been entered in that quarter at that time if not for Martin. And in a Karma-like way I said to Marin, "You know what this means? It means you now have to win."

Dear Universe, I would very much like for Martin to win.

Many quarters ago, we had a little contest where we predicted who would and would not win Vol 29 Q1. I was
sure Martin would win. I am no longer sure of much of anything anymore, but one thing I do know is that Martin
certainly deserves to win. He has been a constant in this little club and has given so much hope and help to many
of us. Yes, Universe, you would make so many of us happy. And I dare say, there would be much partying in this
corner of the forum if Martin wins before he must leave us for being too successful. Good luck, oh silent one!

Robins? No, no. This is a robin -erithacus rubecula

Now what you call a robin is turdus migratorius

Hence the famous error in the 'Captain Hornblower' film where Gregory Peck tells Virginia Mayo that he will have her home before the first robin. The UK robin is not a seasonal migrant.

As much as I love the Brits, I must protest. Look at that dribble of a bird. Does it have a bold, healthy red
breast? NO. It has a red FACE . . . and for good reason. And of course it doesn't migrate. Where would it migrate
to? North rainy to south rainier? An afternoon flight, for sure. Ours has wings like a Boeing, braves feet of ice
and snow to bring the sweetest of songs in spring.

<img src="{wotf}:wotf024: A turdus in your teethith I say.

Now let's face it, the truth is that the old Pilgrim Fathers were a bit nostalgic for the birds they left behind them. Being very strict Puritans of course they meant birds of an avian variety. So they took the poor old turdus migratorius and called it a robin. Of course the fact is that it's a thrush, as any Latin speaker knows.

Now we have thrushes over here too. Here's turdus merula sitting in my garden.

Both with my good old Minolta 5D @ 300mm. None of your modern plastic cameras here.

Who's disrespectin', huh? A very handsome bird it is. However just because the photograph is bigger than the bird doesn't make the bird bigger. And you can see the family resemblance to its European cousin can you not? Now turdus means thrush. And here is another relative, turdus philomelus also known as throstle, mavis or song thrush.

At least I think it is, because around here they're as rare as

Next thing you'll be telling me that turdus merula is not a blackbird.

Πολύ ευχαρίστως, αγαπητέ Φίλιππε (Ισμαήλ) wotf007

Aha, first we have to learn the script. I had forgotten this. So:

Φ=Phi = Ph
ί = iota = i
λ = Lambda = l
ί = iota = i
π = pi = p
π = pi = p
ε = epsilon = e

Φίλιππε = Philippe = Philip

Ι = Iota = I
σ = sigma = s
μ = mu = m
α = alpha = a
ή = eta = e (stressed)
λ = Lambda = l

Ισμαήλ = Ismael = Ishmael

So far, so good. That's just transliteration. Now some real words:

Π = p
ο = omicron = o
λ = l
ύ = upsilon = y (stressed)

Πολύ = poly
Now this appears in English where it usually seems to mean 'every' rather than very?

ε = e
υ = y
χ = chi = kh
α = a
ρ = rho = r
ί = i
σ = s
τ = tau = t
ω = omega = oh
ς = zeta = z

ευχαρίστως = eykhariostohz

So with much effort I think I may have something like a phonetic version of the words that Google tells me mean 'very gladly'.

Am I anywhere close, George?

Never mind. I enjoyed the effort.
