So, is it unusual for there to be so many SHMs and HMs among forumites?

It varies quarter to quarter. I don't keep a tally, but there seem to be a lot of SHMs to me this time around.

Congrats to everyone's hard work! Let's rock on to 37!

Great news, Tony! That's two in a row of being in the top 50 from around the world. Keep aiming at that bullseye. You hit it, it's just that some Robin Hoods split your arrow! Great job! Stay focused!

Happy with that result for this story. It's a revised HM from a year ago, and I'll take the result as a sign I fixed the problems I set out to fix.

Huge congrats to Peony, and wow! to all the HMs and SHMs this time. Well done!

This is how it begins, Pen-Prince. Small victories, that give us signs we are on the right path. Keep the faith, never quit, do the work, and you shall receive the reward. There was another WotF winner from Nigeria. He blazed the trail for you!

I was just becoming friends with Walter when he died. He had sold a story to Future Science Fiction Digest, and we were just a few weeks from publishing it when he posted to Facebook a picture of him in the hospital for diabetic complications. A few days later, his friends said he had died. That was a sad day, he was not old, and had a bright future ahead.

Nice list, Chuck. Thanks! I don't believe Kate McEachern is a Forumite, but I'd love to have her prove me wrong. She's a Superstar. I saw her post to our Facebook group.

Congrats again to all that received honors! And if you didn't place this time, that's the great thing about this contest--there's always the next quarter!

Keep writing. Keep sending.

Yea. When you say trailblazer you have no idea. He's one of the only handful of Africans to have won it. And maybe the only homegrown one. So many of us said if he can, we can. And started taking it seriously after he did. It's like they say, how do you know you can unless someone that looks like you does it? He lives on through all of us. I said I would win it for him. Two HMS down. Let's see how it goes. Even if I don't, someone, one of us will. wotf008

I just received personal rejection for my Q4 sub from the Mag of F&SF:

Thank you for giving me a chance to read "Cypress at the bottom of the bayou." I liked the sentence-level prose but I thought the pacing needed to be more effective.

I didn't ban her. Nor would Martin if she wasn't violating our TOS. It's not a perfect system, and it does come under constant attack by spammers--it's why new security protocols are in place. If some mistake happened, please let us know and we'll look into it. Privately, please.

As far as banning goes, it's probably a computer glitch or spammers. You get to know people's personalities at a certain age. You know who you would immediately vouch for and those you wouldn't. Maybe it comes with age, who knows? Wulf is dedicated, hard-working, an excellent moderator, and as we Forumites know, would always give, and does always give, a person the benefit of the doubt. Martin is a friend of Wulf's and I'd vouch for him also.

A day after I joined WOTF FORUM, I was mysteriously banned. I sent a letter to the Moderator and the problem was rectified a day later.

Since the Forumites announced their results, I'll announce my HM for 4th Quarter. I'm always reluctant to post any results as I'm beginning to see this contest now as a Marathon, not a Sprint. So I don't. But I do wish everyone who placed my personal congratulations, best wishes, and remind those who didn't place – THIS IS A MARATHON. DON'T GIVE UP.

Best,

Retro wotf008

I can understand that. It took a long time before I decided to post my results in my signature for similar reasons. (I can't remember why I changed my mind on that, at present.)

Well, I haven't heard anything... maybe because I sent my story in, on the last day, via snail mail... 😛 Perhaps it has been entered in the next quarter, though it was postmarked on the thirtieth. I'll email Joni in a few days, once all the excitement has died down.

Otherwise CONGRATULATIONS Peony and to all who placed! Now send those stories out somewhere else Smile

Remember, semifinalists now come later, so if you haven't gotten the call but have no results in the next few days, it's very possible you're a semifinalist.

Ah ok, do you know when the semifinalists will be notified?

Also, if the story was disqualified for some reason, they would still send an R, right?

If memory serves, semifinalists are notified by email right after Joni has called all the Finalists with their Final results. And if a story is disqualified--say that you left your name on it or submitted a 25,000 word story when the contest clearly says 17,000 max--you'd just get a rejection. You'd have to ferret out that issue yourself, Joni likely won't have time to tell you.

Joni is a one man show. But she does the work of ten men. She's amazing. Most nights, those people are working in their offices until midnight. Do wait for the winners to announce before contacting her, however. She has so much to keep up with; our patience really helps her out. I'm saying this to all, just using your post to do so, Eagerink. Give her a chance to do her job. : )

Hoping for good news for those still waiting! Semifinalist comes with a shiny prize! A brief critique from David Farland! That's worth its weight in gold. My story in DEEP MAGIC right now was a semifinalist that benefited from Dave's sound advice. It's a contest prize that's not often mentioned, but it's a wonderful benefit from Writers of the Future!

All the beast,

Wulf Moon

Did you get a confirmation email from Joni? Usually she'll say right there in the email which quarter your story was entered in! If not, then yeah, like Moon says, I'd wait a bit and then shoot her a message. At least we're not alone!
