Good luck! I've been responsible for fun issues like that in the past. Usually the causes are obvious, sometimes...not so much. I have my fingers crossed for you to get the obvious variety!

Submitted. In again. Like jumping into a crowded pool.
I've spent the last couple of months working on marketing my first novel and assembling an anthology. So I decided to revise and resubmit a prior HM. I think it was a good revision; cut out about 10%, mostly some flashback background. We'll find out in another three months or so...

Glad to hear you entered. Good luck. I would like to know how resubmissions with an HM or higher works out.
I tried it once, but still got an HM. I just read through that story and found out why it never got higher than an HM. Either that means I'm growing as a writer, or horrible at checking my work before submitting. Maybe a little from column A – A little from column B.

I've taken a ridiculously long time to write a mere 3450 word short story for V40 Q2. Polish. Polish. Spit! Polish. I'm confident it no longer sux. Is it good enough to place? No clue. I printed it out and will read it 1-2 more times before submitting today or tomorrow. For some reason I am more likely to see mistakes when I look at a printout.

I've resubbed a few of mine with revisions, though usually I did so when I ran out of time for a given quarter or wasn't able to finish a story to my own satisfaction. Their historical progresses have been:
Story 1: HM -> HM
Story 2: SHM -> SHM -> HM
Story 3: HM -> HM -> SF
So one never changed, one went down, and one climbed up. However, there are definitely cases of writers revising former Rs and HMs up all the way to actually winning the Contest, so it's always worth trying. You're always better off being entered, regardless.
(Addendum: Story 3 is actually an exception to the ran out of time rule, because my second resub was from some excellent feedback, and my third and final was from me feeling I'd not done the story justice, and really wanting to give it another try. So of the three, looked at from a cold and objective standpoint, it makes the most sense that it'd be the one to improve its placing.)

Story 1: HM -> HM
Story 2: SHM -> SHM -> HM
Story 3: HM -> HM -> SF
The one time I resubmitted, I went from a SHM to R Though, reading it back, the first few pages were rough as toast because it was a very last minute resub and I rejigged the structure. I didn't leave myself enough time to get another pair of eyes on it, or really edit it as I usually would. Burned my fingers a bit, it did. I think the story has potential, so I may try again in a future quarter, especially if I am in to the last month and don't have anything in the pipeline. I will also make sure to retain the title, as per Jody's recent post on this point.

Resubs worked fine for me. Sadly, I'm not a new idea generator factory person. I've worked from home for over 12 years now and that totally stifles creativity. The times I do take short vacations I tend to go to the same place(s).
My advice is as always to travel, see new things, fill that cup. *

I agree. I like reading on paper. I also agree that I over edit and .
I thought I was done with a story and then I tried having the computer read it out loud. I don't think I get through a couple paragraphs without stopping it and then reading the section again and tweaking it. So, is that helping? Maybe.

~ I honestly believe that good stories write themselves. You can always start writing a story, but the characters tell their own tales and if you're lucky enough, you get to merely be in the audience watching everything unfold. ~ 8/1/2022
