@annax Oh, I politely wholly disagree on that
BUT what I really want is Neil Blomkamp’s Alien 3 script he wrote. It was going to be fantastic! Ugh! A direct sequel to Aliens with the all the surviving cast (literally, as in they didn’t get killed by the Aliens 😆)
lol. I will agree to disagree.
But yes! I definitely wanted Neil Blomkamp's Alien 3 continuation. I've even seen the story board images, heard them talk about making it...and then nothing. I honestly hope we'll get to see like, the king alien or the queen mother alien in the future. Sigourney Weaver still looks amazing. Let her be Ripley again!
~ I honestly believe that good stories write themselves. You can always start writing a story, but the characters tell their own tales and if you're lucky enough, you get to merely be in the audience watching everything unfold. ~ 8/1/2022

So many onions! Cough, cough. Thanks for telling a story about the community of story tellers. It was so touching, I shared it with my husband.
Is it just me, or did someone named Edith used to do Joni's job? At least maybe signing rejections?
I'm unaware of any Edith, but it's possible.

@empressed No, I'm from Austin. The workshop was held online this year, which is one of the few ways I was able to afford it as a student, lol.
@keltondavis I know what you mean. Between car rental/air fare, hotel fees and workshop fees, I can't attend anything unless it's online. When I win WOTF, I'll have to pack LOTS of spam and bread for sandwiches. LOL (And I am not a student.)

I thought they feed you there. Well, if not, we can room together, and I'll share food with you.
They pay for flight and hotel, but not food save for a couple of events: a casual dinner one night, and the gala dinner.
In recent years, they have arranged some rides to a grocery store where you can stock up on supplies. (Stores close to the hotel tend to be pricey.) There are refrigerators in the rooms. (Typical hotel mini fridges.)
There's a diner in the hotel. It's convenient for your schedule, but not cheap. Sandwiches tend to start at $12-14. There's also the poolside cabana bar with similar prices.
The steakhouse in the hotel... Don't. Just don't. I mean, if you want to say you ate at a fancy place that cost an arm and a leg, OK, but it's more than I am comfortable spending on a single meal. But beyond that, it's NOISY. We couldn't carry on a conversation.
There's a Subway across the street and a little west. Tim Powers likes a restaurant that's farther down. (I forget if it's pizza or burgers. Maybe both.) There's a nice Italian place a couple blocks east where Eric and Darci and Kary and I had a great meal. (Also a good ice cream place.) There's a McDonald's in walking distance, and Mel's Diner. There's an IHOP a couple blocks away. There's an open-air mall across the street and a little east. It includes a number of options, including California Pizza Kitchen and Cabo Wabo. (The V31 writers seemed to end up at Cabo Wabo almost every night. We were in the Loew's back then, which is attached to the mall.)
These are just places I remember. And I'm sure there are bars. (I don't drink, so I don't know the bar scene.)
But there's so much going on in your schedule! You won't have a lot of time to go exploring, so closer options are better. There's a coffee shop directly east of the hotel that's fast and affordable.

I will say that the food was more expensive than I expected. I ate in the hotel restaurant more than I should have because it was convenient. There’s no free coffee or breakfast at the hotel but as mentioned there’s a reasonable (think airport Starbucks pricing) coffee shop across the street. WotF provided drinks and water and snacks in the conference room. The Subway is easy to walk to, as is Tim Powers’s pizza and sandwich shop - that’s the most affordable place around. They paid us for the stories on the first day, too, which helped defray expenses a bit. But definitely if you win you want to start an “eating in Hollywood” fund.

Right up until the moment Joni called me for my first finalist, I would have told you I wasn't sure I'd ever make finalist.
Afterwards, I would have told you I wasn't sure I could ever do it again. All three times. Today!
When Joni called me to tell me I was the published finalist, it was staggering.
Still is, matter of fact.

I’ll keep dreaming and writing. I admit I’m feeling a bit discouraged with submissions and contests just now but I only say it out loud because it’s probably good for all of us to know that it happens. But giving up? Well that’s not an option. I’ve been resting, consuming stories while waiting on our results. But I did finish the first draft of my fourth novel and I’m about to start a whole new book.

@clfors I agree. Writers write. They don't just write for contests. Brandon Sanderson said he never perfected short stories because he never wanted to write short stories. He wanted to write epic fantasy. Look what he did.
I think that if you stop to just focus on WotF, you will only achieve that—if that. I have written for the contest a few times. This is the last quarter I am eligible to enter, because I sold a story for more than enough to get into SFWA at the pro level. But, I've never betrayed the story for the sake of the venue. I just finished a 104k word novel, am working on another that will run around the same or longer. If the story I entered this Q doesn't place, I will flesh that out into a novel while I'm plotting the sequel to the one I just finished. Writers write.
I didn’t realize they hold it at the Roosevelt! I lived just a few blocks away on Martel during my lawless youth. There’s a pretty solid Ralph’s nearby.
In 2019, they held it at the Loew's Hotel. It was very fancy!

@r-w-ware sounds like you’re doing just as you should Congrats on your sale and your novels!
I do enjoy writing short stories but I want to tell my big stories too and this one I just finished is the last in my series. I’m going to keep entering the contest but I need to balance better because I have let my dedication to submitting here and elsewhere sidetrack me from my novels and that’s not what I want. Same with Illustrators.

@clfors I'm long past eligibility for the IotF. I illustrated a SFWA accredited e-zine, when they still accredited venues. And I've done book and album covers.
it's really novels and short stories for me, but Novels over short stories.
