Pretty sure I know what my story will be for this quarter. There's an idea that just keeps whizzing around my brain that I think is going to write out quite well once I start it.

v37 Q1 - R; Q2 - SHM; Q4 - HM
v38 Q1 - HM; Q2 - SHM; Q3 - HM; Q4 - HM

Argh, you're kidding!

On the up side, I have a bunch of ideas I didn't manage to write for Q1, so maybe one of those will work out for Q2. Stranger things have happened anyway.

Hello fellow forumites,

I am looking to get a few more crits under my belt in Q2 and I want to throw out a very specific offer. If you're looking to revise a previous HM/SHM and resubmit,  especially if you're doing it because pandemic/Christmas/life stress has you short on time and despairing of new words, I would love to take a look and crit it for you. (All I ask is you let me know after the judging what results you got this time!) So if that's you, shoot me a message, I'll give you my email and you can send it over!

I love critting for people and it's one way I improve. My winning piece was an edited SHM that I would not have known how to fix without some outside help, and in honor of that, as I prepare for the gala and workshop, I want to pay it forward.

I'm definitely interested in getting some feedback on one I want to submit for Q2. I'll shoot you a message with the information shortly.

With quarter one submitted I'm looking at going over my long list of potential story concepts and knocking something out early. It'll feel harder than waiting for fresh inspiration to strike but I think it's a good grown up writer skill to start working on.

Now that I've got some new tools in my kit to carry forward, I definitely plan on making a push for that coveted win. Or, barring that, at least a SF.

@clfors I’ve found two approaches. I’ve followed the WotF workshop teachings and homework of listing 3 things from personal experience, 3 objects, and then list 3 story ideas. I have also tried Super Secrets writing prompts.

I think with this quarter I am going to try to have a little fun with the story. I have been so focused on learning the craft, that I lost tract of having fun while I do it. So this quarter my main goal is to enjoy it. Yes I will follow what I learned, but foremost I am going to work on enjoying the process.

I really enjoyed brainstorming using WotF class teqniques so that is what I am going to do, instead of a formal prompt. However, I do like how KYD process uses 1000 words of consciousness to narrow into heart’s desire. So I may try that after I have done research and have story ideas using WoTF brainstorming.

Im starting to develop an idea that I think I will enjoy. It doesn’t have anything to do with what originally prompted it.

@craydimensional I’m excited about your goal to have fun with it this quarter!

I have a story idea percolating as well! In the passive brainstorm mode for now while I work on my sketching a bit. I’m kinda hoping to dig in and write it before my husband’s Christmas break ends on the 10th and I have to get back to homeschooling our littlest two.

I'm in a mixed attack mode now--I have a revising SHM that I'm looking at for Q2, but also working up a story that is either a Q2 alternate or a Q3 prospect, and roughed the edges off a couple of prior HM entries so that they can get winged out to other markets. Those I won't revisit for WotF, but I don't want to put them out to pasture just yet, either.

The alternate is one I am just going to enjoy working on--it's one that potentially violates a bunch of my default expectations for what makes a good WotF story, but isn't exactly a miss when you hold it up to some of the Contest's winning entries from the past, either. Should be fun to work on it...

@storysinger

This is one of the most amazing things about worldbuilding, in my opinion. Being able to watch as the world grows with continued exploration. Starting from the point of my initial novel idea, my own fantasy world has developed a much deeper lore the further into the past I go. Going on that adventure with your characters is one of the things I love most about writing.

I think, as long as you enjoy the story, you're on the right path no matter what process you use to get there. grinning I hope the brainstorming elements work!

I generally try to focus on enjoyment with my first draft (the thrill of getting the story out) and worry about the craft aspects more during revisions. If I get the stuff I care about down on paper first, I can use the craft aspects to refine it and make sure I'm saying what I want to say, if that makes sense.

Happy New Year again to everyone!!!

Wanted to let you know that 38B (Volume 38 2nd Quarter) portal is now open and ready to take submissions.

Remember with the new system there will already be a draft in your account for anyone that has already submitted in the past. The system auto generates a new draft for all people that already have an account.

Good luck!!!

Best, Jason

Really annoyed. My world building file got corrupted and I had no recent back up. Just typed a big chunk of it over the past few days but about two weeks work altogether.

Tbh a programmer should know better and I'll repeat that along with copious expletives while I redo it.

At least it's reasonably fresh in my head.
