I'm in too! Love this contest. The deadline made me finally do my research for part of my novel in progress that needs fixing and then write a short story background for one of the side characters that needed to be redefined. It's way too short to win, but I've already "won" so to speak :).
That's awesome! I'm still fairly new to this, but my understanding of it is that writing is writing is writing. I know that I've really benefitted from the deadline (mostly polished stories > no stories at all), and I love that it was motivation for you to research your novel!
Best of luck to everyone who submitted!

So those of us who will be in are in. So good success to everyone. There are three places by nice if we filled them all. Not sure if everyone who doesn't place can be a finalist but be good if a bunch of us are.

Good luck all! My boss kindly gave everyone the afternoon off work yesterday to enjoy the sun, so of course I saw it as extra writing time. But after being woken by a barking dog early in the morning, a neighbour's car alarm was constantly going off all day. So I was quite frazzled when I submitted at 1:30am UK time. The last I heard of the alarm (earplugs in) was 2am.

Good luck, everyone! Now comes the hardest part of all: the waiting! This is only my second submission, but I'm hoping I can pull better than the HM I got before. Right now, I'm just glad I'll soon have plenty of time to develop my Q3 ideas.

A reminder to all in the Forum.
This Saturday we have a special event happening in the WotF Forum. It's an Ask Me Anything AMA event with bestselling writer extraordinaire, TIM POWERS. If you don't know that name, go get a copy of ANUBIS GATES. Or ON STRANGER TIDES, my personal favorite. Tim is one of the most literary writers in speculative fiction. The event will be held here Saturday, April 24th, from 1 pm to 3 pm PST, on this Forum, in the Writers of the Future Online Workshop Topic.
Don't miss out! Tim Powers is a judge of this Contest and in my opinion, one of the most creative writers alive today!
See you there!

Now to try sitting still and twiddling my thumbs until Q2 results come out...yeah that's not gonna happen. I'm too busy jotting down ideas for stories to use for upcoming quarters and attempting to put pen to paper on some of them.
I swear I love having an overactive imagination concerning the fantasy world I've built up, but it keeps putting ideas in my head that I'm sitting here like "Gad dang it, when am I gonna have time to write that one!? Oh well, better add it to the list..."

Now that I look back at what I learned between the taking in the 2nd QTR and now, I am not confident about this entry. I didn't have proper formatting (although it had all components rules asked for).

@jcunningham maybe I'm being dense but for the Mike Resnick contest when it says "The story needs to be accompanied with a single title page which should have the following information..." does this mean a separate file attached to the email with parts a-e or just the 1st page of the main manuscript including that info?
Because on the site it also says earlier: "The name of the author should not appear on the actual manuscript."

@scribblesatdusk Probably they want a separate file then, yeah.

But then it also says this:
"Those determined to be the best stories will be forwarded (with all identifying information about the author deleted) ..."
Which makes me think it is in the same file otherwise they'd basically be sending along a nearly blank title page...
Oh well, to be safe I'll make 2 sep files. Wish they also wrote what timezone the file is due at to know how much more time I have with this beast.

it keeps putting ideas in my head that I'm sitting here like "Gad dang it, when am I gonna have time to write that one!? Oh well, better add it to the list..."
This happens to me CONSTANTLY. All those stories clamoring in my head to be written, and I just keep telling them, "Get back on that list, it's not your turn!" Lol. But on the positive side, you'll never be short of ideas for what to write!

For the first 2.5 years, this wasn’t me at all. I’d hear people say that and feel huge imposter syndrome! I’d have one idea in progress, and one planned. Then, it was like something in my head unlocked and I started having to keep notes on my phone or writing flash pieces to capture an idea. I’m still not an idea factory, far from it, but I have more than enough ideas to keep me busy!

I try to right them down when the new ideas hit me. (agreed - normally at a time/place when I can't actually write them).
Got a nice little list now, though.
A bit late to post, I know, but my Q2 is in. I'm looking forward to seeing how it does.

@scott_m_sands If you only just submitted this, I think it may actually be your Q3? Contest quarters are effectively one back, I think of them as indicating the Quarter during which judging begins, though I have no idea if that has anything to do with it. Anyway, Q1 is submitted Oct-Dec, Q2 from Jan-Mar, and so on. So current submissions, April through June, would be in for Q3.

Thanks for confirming. I actually submitted my last story back in late March. I believe that puts it in Q2. I haven't submitted for this Q3 yet. I just hadn't posted on the forum that I submitted it then.
And I have sometimes been confused in the past with which quarter number is being judged and when. So your question is fair!

@scott_m_sands Oh, God, which quarter is being judged at any given moment is a whole different animal than which quarter is being submitted to. Now that we've heard back on results from Q1, we're waiting on results for Q2--but odds are good we may end up waiting until after submissions close for Q3. The quickest quarter to get judged is usually Q4, because they're usually prepping for an April gala and anthology release, but the pandemic has thrown things all out of whack, so I have no idea how things will go this year.
