Well... not a winner. I appreciate getting this far, but I was hoping for a different call.

*BIG HUGS* I'm sorry. I know that feel, believe me.

Oh man I am sorry. I know so well how that feels. Take your time to get over the disappointment but know this: you’re hitting the inner ring. It’s going to happen again if you keep submitting.

Been there.
It's a tough call to get.

Personally I didn't think I'd ever get another finalist. Then I did. Now I know I'll never get another one.

I'm sorry, BrandieJ! 🙁 Making Finalist is an amazing accomplishment, though! You are so, so close!!

Yes it really is. A winner with a slightly different mix of judges. Go sell it!

Oh, but this is so true. I adore Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle, but having had them as judges on at least 2 of my quarters goes a long way to explaining why it took me six tries as a finalist before my win.

Well... not a winner. I appreciate getting this far, but I was hoping for a different call.

We've been talking privately through the whole experience, but I should also post something here. All three of my friends that were finalists this quarter got the tails side of the coin. You were not alone, and I feel for all of you. Winning is what you dream of, and making finalist is as close as you get. You were there.

And that's important to remember. You were there. A different set of judges could have come up with totally different rankings. Dave knows how to pick winners, and he picked your story to be in the anthology. But he has to let go, and accept what choices the other judges make. It doesn't change the fact that he wanted YOUR story in the anthology. He would be pleased with any of those eight making it in. You were chosen.

The quality at finalist level is incredibly high. Remember that because of SFWA pro rate changes this past year, winners that were formerly disqualified with their pro status suddenly could enter again. This year is going to have incredible competition. That you made top eight out of thousands from around the world is a BIG DEAL. See it as such. And go write your next winner.

I wish you the very best, Brandie. You've proven you've got the Right Stuff. Now do it again.

I do feel for my friends that didn't make it this round, especially those that were finalists. That's the toughest pill to swallow, and you just have to remind yourself that if it you did it once, you can do it again. You hit the bullseye and were top 8 out of thousands from around the world. Never forget that. It's a GREAT honor, and says volumes about your writing.

Since it's now publicly announced, I do have to give a shout out to my friend Elizabeth Chatsworth, THIRD PLACE WINNER this quarter! David Farland knows I'm a freelance editor, and referred her to me for editing on her first novel. I read her first chapter and it was obvious she was a skilled writer. I asked her if she was submitting to Writers of the Future. She told me she never had. I told her that her writing was excellent, and that I believed she could win if she entered. I told her to send a story in, that a win could only help her novel career.

You know what? Glory be!, she took my advice and won on her FIRST try! I also invited her to join the Forum. She is our new member, Yorkie!

Well done, Elizabeth! You're a winner! SEE YOU IN HOLLYWOOD! wotf009

Thanks all. I've started to submit the story to other markets - so wish me luck! I struggle with short story ideas, so it's a exciting day when I feel like I have a good one. I will admit that the one I submitted that got finalist was the best one I've written. I so admit/envy folks that can write a lot of shorts quickly. Good luck with the next quarter everyone!

Brandie J. hang tight! I'm sure you'll come up with another exciting story. The presumption of regularity.

This may or may not help: No matter how wonderful the chef is, I will not eat Mexican food due to medical reasons. I simply can't. It could be a five-star restaurant with a master world chef, and I won't eat it. A skilled culinary expert, and it doesn't matter. Therefore, assuming you have basic writing skills, and you obviously do, your cuisine was not the best food taste for a particular Judge. Some stories are not the best food taste for FIRST READER.

THIS IS A CONTEST. It's as simple as that. Amongst thousands of entries. This is not life drama, and there is no appellate process for review.

It's not a medical test or procedure which governs life or death. It's a contest.

You made finalist once. You're bound to do so again. Every Monday, our Keeper of Records (Swift Potato) sends out FLASH PROMPTS for KYD exercises as part of Wulf Moon's 37th Volume Challenge. Maybe one of those prompts could give you a story idea.

Best,

Retro wotf008
