Congrats, Dr. Jest & Dosmax!
It looks like the WotF gods or demons were awaiting Writergirl's Q4 Submission before letting the bottom fall out.
HM for me.
Two more quarters to go for this year, but I fear that one was my best bet.

Congratulations to all the winners!
From what I've read in Volume 34 by Dave Farland, if anyone here obtained a Silver Honorable Mention, it means their story is deemed publishable.
Which means they could take their story and begin submitting it out to the magazines.
I believe the delay in Q2 (but I won't swear on a bible to this belief) is the sheer number of applicants is off-the-wall crazy. I won't etch it into stone, but my guess is 8,000 worldwide. In Volume 34, Dave had mentioned he reads about 4,000. I can only assume the number's gone up considerably.
And that's all the more reason to give triple kudos to all those who placed in the contest, and kudos to those that tried but didn't.
Congrats everyone who placed!! (And those who will place but have yet to post...)
It's a rejection for me, though I'm not surprised. Realized a little too late that I left multiple comments with my name on my manuscript. Derp. Now I'm left to ruminate whether or not that was the only reason it was rejected...

"Believe in the me that believes in you!" -the immortal words of Kamina, Gurren Lagann
Well, I'm really happy you all didn't have to wait any longer. Congrats to all that entered! For those just starting out, that takes courage. After that first bit, it takes determination. And as the results go up and down every quarter you enter, it takes courage AND determination. Fall back on your faith in who you are and why you do this. You are a writer. Getting to the level of professionally published writer, and then to pro writer? Those are just more tiers on the path. Be assured, you are in the best place you can be to level up to another tier.
Congrats also to all those getting notice of honors (and those that have in the past!). It is no small thing to be told by David Farland you are doing the right things in your writing. And that's what he's saying with those certificates. You did good things that moved him to make sure you got commendation so you'd keep at it and not give up. And for those that received Silvers? I count Dr. Jest, Dos Max, and Benjamin Tyler Smith so far. Those mean you were in Dave's keeper stack of about thirty or so. He could only choose eight out of that stack to send on to the panel of judges for the quarter. It means you were VERY close. Top 30 out of somewhere around 2000 entries from around the world in a quarter is stellar. So don't quit now! Q4 is still up for grabs, and SOMEBODY is going to win it.When you're hitting that close to the bullseye, I can say from experience it's just a matter of time. Or you pro out, and that's a very good thing to have happen as well.
Keep the faith. Keep pushing your abilities. Keep learning. Keep writing fresh stories.
I wish you all the very best! Cheers!

Oh, and be sure to send these stories that came back from Q2 out to respectable markets. Do it tomorrow! All of you! Even those that didn't get a certificate. Figure out what you wrote, then figure out what markets publish the kind of thing you wrote. Send it to those that pay the best, surely. But don't overlook the fact that some that don't pay *quite* the best may be a better fit, or may be running a limited time theme that is seeking EXACTLY what you just wrote. THAT market will be your best bet for a sale. Trust me on this. Get on the Submission Grinder and do a market search and SEND YOUR STORY OUT AND FOGET ABOUD IT!
And then go write your next. Put everything into your Q4. If you don't, someone else will. And if they've got skills, they'll be going to the awards ceremony next year. If it could be you, if it should be you, then do your very best to make sure you've got the best shot at it being you.
I leave you with this, and it's from one of the Star Wars movies, spoken by Qui-Gon Jinn. For years I had it taped to my monitor. If you think it would help, tape it to yours.
YOUR FOCUS DETERMINES YOUR REALITY.

Now that I received my rejection, I can publicly confess. I started my story with my protagonist waking up. It may not have been good enough otherwise but that didn't help.
Same here, my MC is proudly waking up quite at the beginning. First-round for me, first rejection, meaning that from this point I can go only up.
Congrats for those receiving HM or better results. My sympathy for rejected authors, I am sure they'll get better news in the next rounds.

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you're still writing, but it's important to note that getting an R means the story isn't right for the contest. Doesn't necessarily mean the story is bad. (Granted, it might well mean the story needs improvement, but there's nothing wrong with trunking a story for awhile and coming back to it later with fresh eyes.)

Thanks, DP.
I've had positive feedback from a few agents for crime novel submissions and too many R's in here to think I have a chance.
You're getting mainly above R - so keep going. I'm sure you'll make it.

HM for me. I always have mixed feelings about HMs. I've yet to sell one, but I have had a lot of success with my Rs.
Congrats to everyone who entered and especially those who placed and specially especially to those who are suspiciously quiet.
So last evening was a Thursday, was it?
Congratulations to all ! ! !
Including those who are still going forward. (This does not include me. I'll take my HM and run.)
To those who got an "R" this time around, rest assured everyone here knows something of the blood and sweat that went into your efforts.

Thought my humorous piece for this quarter might be a total fail, so I was pleasantly surprised with an HM.
Even better, I immediately sent it out to a comic fantasy anthology I've had my eye on for a while and got an acceptance today. Yahooey!
Congrats to those who already placed and fingers crossed for all of you still in the races to win.

Argh. Posted without realizing i was logged out! Rejected again. Frustrating because it's a much improved rewrite of the HM. I plan on subbing it elsewhere, but I'd really appreciate a critique first if anyone's willing to swap? Want to make sure it's as good as it can be. Thanks!
And yes, I've already got my 4th Q entry lined up.

Do you send your sf/f stories anywhere else, or just here? Of the two stories I've sold, one never even made it here (I wrote it specifically for one of Flame Tree Press's calls for fantasy, and they bought it), and the other was an admittedly much-trimmed version of an R. My finalist has gotten a few personals, but nobody seems to want it. Every market has different readers/editors, and therefore different perspectives. I would honestly recommend that you send some of your stories to other markets and see how they do, if you haven't already. Don't just cast one fishing line and sit in one spot--use a net, and cast it wide.

Can I just tell you all how super flipping amazingly stupendously excited I am to get to post this smiley?!? After posting the other night I hadn't rechecked my email today due to a busier than normal day-job day, so imagine my surprise when just before popping off to bed tonight I logged in and saw Joni's amazing message.
So many congratulations to michaeljwyantjr and all the SHMs and HMs!!! Lots of forum folks chiming in with them. And those of you who didn't get yours this quarter, don't let this get you down. Let it motivate you. Q4 is still open!
Okay, I'll try to stop gushing now. I'm sure I'm gushing.
