Something I'm confused on: If we're supposed to be keeping these confidential - no names, no titles, whatever - how does swapping my story bit with Writer X's story bit, and critiquing on each other's work remain confidential? I know that I got Writer X's work, and Writer X knows they got my work... doesn't that reduce the confidentiality? Can someone explain please?

The people you specifically need confidentiality from are the judges. Anything that might identify your story should be discussed in private confidence (PM or e-mail) with the person/people with whom you trade, in order to prevent disqualification. It is a bit of an honor system in that you're trusting your fellow entrants to keep from publically reveal anything about your work, but they're trusting you to do the same, so it evens out.
