He's playing the villain in the upcoming Star Trek movie too, right?

Does anyone know if Smaug is even appearing in film #1, now that it's split into 3? I notice on IMDB he's listed as the voice of the Necromancer in film #1, but not for the first film as Smaug.

I want to see Smaug. Now. wotf012

I guess it's likely Smaug won't be in the first film. wotf014
I hadn't heard about Star Trek, but I'm a big Trekkie too so that at least i's great news.

Anyway, I've managed to revive the Gator. It wasn't that hard. In the absence of smelling salts I just waved some smoked salmon under her enormous snout. wotf007

I didn't realize Caprica had been cancelled, which shows how out of the loop I am on TV of late. I do miss having an ongoing sci-fi show to watch though. Does anybody else feel like there's been something of a dearth the last year or two? Although I did catch some Falling Skies recently...the execution isn't always perfect, but i have to admit I've liked what I've seen so far.

It does seem to be hard to find a decent sci-fi show (or any really) that keeps you glued to the screen. Falling Skies does it fairly well if you turn off the little logical unit in your head about...20% of the time? Otherwise it's decent, Pope is awesome.

wotf001

I'd suggest looking for DVDs of sci-fi tv shows you may not have seen!

http://scifilists.sffjazz.com/lists_tv.html

Personally I'd strongly suggest Farscape if you haven't seen it yet!

Yeah, 20% sounds about right wotf011 Noah Wylie is pretty awesome too, to my pleasant surprise.

Thanks for that awesome list, I'd forgotten some of those shows existed! My que is about to get some fresh meat...Maybe I'll start with Farscape. I watched the first season years ago but I never saw anything after that. Not sure why, I remember liking it wotf017

I wanted to like Falling Skies. I made a point of watching it, but after the first season, I still wasn't sure one way or another. Kind of an ambivalent "meh."

So I watched the second season too. No change. I'm pretty sure it's forgettable.

You're welcome, hope you find something fun to watch! Farscape is great is you give it time, I like it because it has *so* much imagination and the benefit of the Henson company working on it. Trek aliens (for example) are great but you can only have so many facial deformities and aliens that look exactly like humans but aren't before it gets a bit dull.

Jess,

I'm not sure if you've seen the season 2 finale, but maybe that'll change your mind? They have good ideas, but yeah they do need to kick it up a notch or two I agree. They may pull it out of the fire yet, or go the "Heroes" route and hit the ground burning. Who knows.

Surprised no one else has said anything about this...if they did I missed it which could happen.

But according to one report they are planning on including a nine minute clip and/or trailer from the new Star Trek movie with certain showings of "The Hobbit". I think they are the Imax showings or something along those lines.

ST isn't going to be shown 'till next summer so this is a bit early.

And I don't recall but have they done anything like that before? Seems new.

Took me a while to get to this.

Not your usual ST from the shorter trailer.

I agree, and I think it has promise. When the last one came out I saw it in the theaters and came away feeling affronted because it didn't seem like Star Trek. Saw it again later on DVD and loved it. I'm going into this one with a great deal of hopeful excitement and planning to let it stand on it's own rather than judging it in context of the traditional ST universe.

Yes you have to let this franchise be itself. At least it's about hopeful science-fiction again and no longer luddite SF. God I hated that the franchise had become...

Not sure who he is...did he narrate the trailer? At first it sounded like Patrick Steward.

He plays Sherlock Holmes in the recent BBC rendition. He'll play the villain in the new Star Trek movie.

Fantastic actor, I was thrilled when I found out it was going to be him!

Also, he voices the dragon in The Hobbit movie. (Humorous if you know that the dude playing Bilbo also played Watson on the BBC's Sherlock.)

I thought he was playing the villain. Wouldn't mind watching the BBC version of Holmes.

Anyone, know anything about the Villain? He says he is returning or came back. So was he chased off before the new Kirk's time or is he from the old show?

And I wonder if they will have anything else from "Enterprise".

And this may turn into what I have been wanting a non ST SF movie that ain't horror. I think I would like it better if they had called it something else.

Yar, LD, he is the villain. The unnamed villain. The unnamed-for-no-good-reason villian.

I'm becoming mightily disillusioned with J.J.Abrams. He's a master of suspense, but never seems to be able to provide satisfying answers to his titillating questions. The guy's work is all promise, no payoff. wotf012

I think that's got a lot to do with how he handles most of the work. He seems to be involved in the initial stages, then he hands the project off to a team and moves on to the next thing. I'm thinking mainly his TV stuff... Alias, Lost, Person of Interest, Revolution... I haven't seen that 'answers' problem in the shorter projects of his, the movies like Cloverfield and Star Trek. Maybe the problem is better when he sticks with the project througout instead of conceptualizing and handing off.

Did anyone see or will see the Dr. Who Christmas special?

I first heard about it in a list of Christmas special in my local paper a couple of weeks ago. Then I notice a newer list for one day. Headline a Who Christmas. My first thought was the the band put out a Christmas CD but it was the good Doctor.

Just now trying to get myself into Dr. Who --heard lots of great things about it. So far in season one there have been awesome episodes and this-is-why-some-people-think-sci-fi-is-lame episodes. I'm guessing the latter drops off and the series is later full of nothing but awesome.

In my opinion dr Who has always suffered from dramatic swings in quality and credibility. Some story arcs sing and others, well best left behind us.

I haven't seen the later ones but I loved the earlier ones. Because of circumstances I stopped watching them after the movie. And as I recall I never finished the movie. With the Master taking over living bodies it seemed a bit darker and blood thirsty than most of the series I had watched. But I wouldn't mind watching some of the newer ones.

Just found this on the Apple movie Trailer site "The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones" It's based on a series of books I've seen. I haven't read any even though I have come close.

A series of half angels fight evil beings: werewolves, witches, vampires etc. Some of the books seem to be a bit too much on the romance side for me, plus they seem to be written for YA. Even that last hasn't stopped me from reading something before but this series seems to be related to "Twilight" in one sense.

I'm waiting for "The Three Little Bears and the Zombie Apocalypse," or "Ocean's Seven Dwarves."

Sorry, I couldn't help it. I guess it's just me who's tired of these "cleverly supernatural" twists on fairy tales or histories or whatnot. Just feels like they're trying too hard on most of them.
