I'm happy to report my fourth Flame Tree acceptance. This one is for 'Detective Stories', due out in November. It's a second outing for my two Victorian policemen, MacAndrew and Smithers, whose first case featured in the inaugural edition of The Sockdolager back in 2015.

I also have two other acceptances waiting on a publication date. (That's not counting Albedo 2 where I've been waiting so long I'm pretty sure publication is not going to happen.)

It may be worth pointing out to newer members that acceptances aren't the last stage, publication is. You can have magazines go out of business or editorial changes that leave your story out in the cold again, even when you thought you'd sold it.

Sorry I'm late congratulating you, *Ishmael*, but I'm happy to hear of your continued success! I was both happy/sad for you when you pro'd out, because I know you really wanted to win this contest. But getting in those beautiful pro anthologies is a great honor, and you've done it many times. Keep up the good work, and thanks for letting us know!

Cheers!

Submitted multiple times/earned an HM multiple times (probably with edits each time).

Why did I think you could only submit a story once?

Because finalists and semi-finalists can't be submitted again, maybe? (Anything below that absolutely can be resubmitted, although editing beforehand is recommended.)

Very good to know!

Sent another to Asimovs. I don't know why I bother with them. At this point, my goal with them is for my story to stay under consideration longer than 48 hours. wotf019

Here’s a cool thing I didn’t really expect to have happen to me when I started typing about a hellbeast who doesn’t fit in at the office where he works: “The Howler on the Sales Floor” or “Ulguja müügiosakonnas” was translated into Estonian and is up now in Algernon.

http://www.algernon.ee/node/1137

Thank you to Kudrun Tamm for the translation, and to Kristjan Sander for ushering my story from slush to publication.

As for how this came to be: Mike Resnick's talk during the Vol 34 conference spent some time discussing selling foreign rights and resources to seek out foreign markets. Most of the reprint translation markets out there non-paying or pay in copies of the issues, but some do pay. What Mike was describing was that essentially the value in getting your short fiction work and name in front of audiences that would otherwise not be likely to see it, even for little or no money, may pay off when the times comes for your agent to try to sell translation rights on novels. Being able to point to an established audience in Estonia, Spain, or wherever, may make it more likely to find a novel translation deal or a better translation deal.

In any case, when you're sending reprints out, don't neglect to consider foreign markets.

Thanks everyone.

Congrats Jonathan. Seeing your story in a foreign language must be quite a rush.
I remember stumbling across my first Nature story in Arabic. It was surreal. (Nature buys international rights, so they didn't need to tell me this was happening).

Wonderful news, Becky! Your first pro sale, and to a hardcover anthology at that! This is a great publisher with a fast turnaround from purchase to publish. You won't have long to wait, and it's the greatest feeling holding a REAL BOOK with your story in it. As Dean Wesley Smith once said to me...YOU'RE A PUBLISHED WRITER!

Enjoy the feeling. You worked hard for this!
