I've sold Party, with Echoes, the story I entered (and withdrew) from the third quarter to Redstone SF!

Contratulations, and color me a little jealous. (I've been trying to crack Redstone since they first launched. For those who haven't submitted there, they really do try very hard to give personal feedback, even if it's only a line or two.)

I can make smileys! The set currently displayed comes with the system, but soon I hope to have some originals up.

Suggestions: "I got a form rejection" smiley (probably thumping its fists); "I got an honorable mention smiley" (probably smiling while thumping its fists); "I'm a semi-finalist" smiley (smiling, then sees its crit and cries); "I'm a finalist" smiley (quaking in its boots); and "I won!" smiley (passed out on the floor).

It is, Pat. I've just logged on to find that overnight I've become an associate member of SFWA. I won't qualify for full membership until I can send the the WOTF contract and Redstone SF becomes SFWA-accredited, both of which will happen some time this year.

As their website says, it's probably most useful for new writers, especially in regards to contracts and advice on what to sign (or not to sign). I've already had some benefit from this through another member who asked a question on my behalf about a dubious contract which I ended up not signing (phew!).

I firmly believe in putting your money where your mouth is, so if there is a site you find useful or enjoyable, please donate some money to them, become a member or take a subscription.

Hands up all those writers who use Duotrope and have donated money! If not, go and give them something today. If everyone donated $10, they wouldn't have to operate on a loss.

I just sold a story to Pseudopod. It would not have been picked for WotF, since, even though it was definitely scifi, angled more for the horror flavor. It's a semipro market, and I'm so pleased I could scream! It'll be on the podcast probably some time in April.

Congratulations, f5iver, Patty, and izanobu, on your recent sales! From what I've read here, izanobu and Patty are well along the professional path, and it's exciting to read about. f5iver, is this your first sale?

I've sold a few stories here and there, won a few minor contests, but Pseudopod is the most well-known and regarded of the venues. I'm fairly involved as a bit player in the speculative fiction podcast world, so this was a major deal for me.

It doesn't become really serious, of course, until you sell a novel, but at the moment, even getting a simple response out of an agent is nigh impossible.

Will attending the WotF workshop/awards week, and/or the appearance of the anthology, help you significantly there? I've read some blow-by-blow accounts of past winners' workshop weeks, and it sounds like the contest does try to pack in some PR for its new crop of winners...

Yeah, I don't know how far down the pro path I am. Ask me in 8 more years ;) Just got a response on a full recently from a major publisher that basically said the level of the writing didn't live up to the idea's promise. So yeah... even after getting to the point where editors are requesting fulls, I've still got a long way to go. When pro writers compare a career to a bathtub sloshing water or a game of chutes and ladders, they aren't kidding :)

I'm not sure I like the "Chutes and Ladders" comparison. There's no "Go back to start" space on the Chutes and Ladders board.

Nope, but ups and downs in a writing career are normal from everything I've heard. I don't think I've met a long-term pro writer yet who hasn't had at least one career "crash". Sometimes you go down (ie it seems you can't sell anything, or deals fall through etc) and sometimes you go up. There's no straight path and you don't always end up taking the same route over and over (so yeah, no going back to the start, each path is different, even multiple ones within a career).

Cool! Shall do. The new fiction editor, Cat Sparks, is a local writer and also a WOTF winner (not sure what year). I tend to come across her at almost every writing event around the country.

Thanks, all!

Patty, this particular story was accepted during Damien Broderick's tenure. I haven't submitted anything to Cat Sparks yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so. :)

Congratulations on the sale, Kyle. Good read.

Someone mentioned me somewhere, once. But, it wasn't here. And, it wasn't honorable. (A.K.A. 2x Rejections.)
