Amid a never-ending string of rejections -- most of which are tolerable or even expected, but there's still a few particularly irritating and seemingly inexplicable -- another moderate piece of success. It seems that a story of mine has been accepted by Szortal magazine and is currently being translated to Polish. I think this will be the fifth language in which my works will have been published (unless I am forgetting some) so it's nice to be able to reach new readers wotf008

My thanks to all for your kind words and encouragement. wotf008

Respectfully,
Dr. Bob

P.S. Author, fantasist, poet Jane Yolen is doing a meet and greet near me this December. I found this little tidbit on her website in her Advice for Authors [http://janeyolen.com/for-writers/], and just had to share it:

"Be prepared as you write to be surprised by your own writing, surprised by what you find out about yourself and about your world. Be ready for the happy accident. Open yourself to the numinous, to the shapes and shades of language, to that first powerful thrust of story, to the character that develops away from you (sort of like a wayward adolescent), to the surprise of the exact and perfect ending.

You are–after all–the very first reader of what you write. Please that reader. You may not have any other!"

Now, quite probably, this is my greatest success yet. wotf007

I’m pleased to announce a sale to Clash of the Titles.

What is the Clash of the Titles? In the words of its editor and creator, Gil Bavel:

A new anthology of science fiction, fantasy, horror, steampunk, supernatural horror and more, coming out at WorldCon 2016 MidAmeriCon. It’s a unique idea; a community of writers were invited to claim a title from a list and write a short story, poem or commentary. New writers are rubbing shoulders with old hands writing all-new, original stories. Here’s a taster of the table of contents, not by any means complete:
Paul Levinson–Slipping Time
Mike Resnick–Fastest Dragon
Brian Trent–Vicious Cycle of Life
Adam Bolivar–An Ancient Tomb A-Yonder Lies
Alex Shvartsman–Blood Drive
Bob Vardeman–Mach 5
George Nikolopoulos–An Itinerant in Carcosa
Erica Allaire–Do you Feel Like Calamari Tonight?
Joe Oclon–Faster than Light
Jamie Earhart–Making the Grade
Keith Graham–Into Her Own
James Stegall–Down and Out in Paris, Texas
Hope Erica Shultz–I’ve got a Black Hole in Aisle 9
Deborah Walker (As Kelda Crich)–Night of the Vrykolakas
David Gerrold–Commentary
–And Counting!

Randy, Rebecca, Matt, Preston, Alpha, Philip, thank you very much! wotf007

It was an interesting process, picking an intriguing title out of a big list and writing a story to fit it, and then going through a workshop -- though I have to admit that Gil didn't suggest a single change to my manuscript, other than to make it longer. And yes, we do have a few big names on board, more to come maybe.

Incidentally, that's the third sale I owe to Deborah Walker, after SF Comet and Szortal. She makes all these sales all the time, several of them to markets not even listed on the Grinder, so I try some of them too and sometimes I even succeed wotf008

That's a great concept to work from George. Writing to a title had to be a challenge.

Great story. I saw a Black Mirror episode that was akin to this, but I liked your extra twist at the end.

Amos,

I saw that episode after the story was accepted. For a while I was freaked out. Fortunately they went a different direction at the end. Loved that episode tho.
And the others. Great show.

Congrats to Dustin, George, George (:P), and belatedly Dr Bob!

I hope everyone has had some successes they wanted this year, and if not, that next year will more than make up for it.

Earlier today I learned that my story "How to Configure your Quantum Disambiguator" (originally published in Nature earlier this year) is on the shortlist for the Quantum Shorts contest!

I'm very pleased to report a ninth acceptance for the calendar year, eleventh overall.

My 2700 short story Time's Winged Chariot has been accepted for Third Flatiron Publishing's Spring 2016 anthology, It's Come to Our Attention.

This is my first piece of alternative history to be accepted.

wotf007

And it does help make up for the fact that I also passed 250 rejections for the year wotf002
