Welcome, Clive! I'm in the UK too.
Do our newer members all know about the Submission Grinder (https://thegrinder.diabolicalplots.com)? You can record your submissions to various mags (anonymously) and track how long it takes to get a response against the average in the database. WotF has its own page and you can see some interesting stats about submissions and response times. Just be careful, once you start checking the site it's pretty addictive.

Only been writing spec fic for a year but I know the Grinder well. It does give me a good idea of average response times and when markets open, but yeah it can be agitating to keep checking back for updates. But the thing with WOTF is that they take so long to get back to you that I kinda forgot I even submitted a story until the SHM notice came in the email. Can't imagine knowing the whole time and biting my nails for that long lol.

Hi, Llalah 718 from Brooklyn checking in. Not really a scifi writer, my preference leans towards magical realism or horror, but I am going to see what I can conjure up for this quarter.
Howdy Llalah.
One of my favorite things about seeing new board members (and in this case, a pleasant flood of new board members) is that any new name, anyone can reach finalist at any time.
Just like Jeremy!
So I'm glad to meet ya. All of ya.

Hello and welcome! Talking about the basic genres you like to write in is fine, but quick protip: please don't give any specific details about your stories until you know their official placement in any quarter (and sometimes not even then). It's important for everyone to keep our entries confidential to avoid disqualification.

First entered the contest in 2015; never managed to register here due to the forum bug. Now there's no bug, so there's me.
Five Rs; nothing higher. Current contest entry submitted 3/27.
Pleased to see many writers here with whom I've interacted in other writing fora.

Hi! My name is Vince.
I figure it's time to get into the community.
I love the outdoors, running and climbing. I live in Northern AZ serving burgers. I am part time bum, part time wannabe writer and full time fool. I do anything I can to avoid using my Pre-Med degree . I have been writing for four years. I started with a weird self published novel under a pseudonym. That taught me a lot, but mostly that amateurs should practice more than worry about self publishing haha. Since then I have done everything I know how to keep writing and improving my stories.
I can't wait to get more submissions under my belt. I love how this contest keeps me on my toes. Writing often and never getting stuck on one idea for too long. The incentive of that trip to smog filled LA is enough to get the words on the page and that's what matters most wether or not I ever end up being a professional.
