The closest I can get to art is looking over my wife's shoulder while she draws. wotf001

I can see how my initial post might have given the wrong impression, though!

As far as resubmitting, I don't know if there are any rules against it for the artist side of the contest. Writers can't resubmit stories which scored semi-finalist or above, but anything below that is fair game.

(Although, realistically speaking, if it didn't win the first time around...)

Hi there,

Oops!-sorry about that-thought you were also an artist-and btw-that was funny! wotf001
You know, you do have a point there-but at the same time, I read somewhere in this huge forum, that the judges were 'rotated', depending on the quarter-but then again-how would we know, right ?...It's like "Russian Roulette" and we'll never know...I guess it's better to be safe than sorry and I'll stick to your wisdom-thanks.

That's true for the artist side of things, you're right. On the writing side, there's one main judge who reads everything each time around.

Maybe someone who's entered and/or won on the artist side can offer more useful advice. wotf007

One main judge (a Gate Keeper) for the writers each quarter. But the three judges who choose the three winners from the pile of eight Finalists each quarter rotates.

No idea how it works on the artist side.

The Submissions Grinder is a brand-new website where you can find short story markets, and after you've submitted your story, you can 'track' it and get a better idea of when you might expect a reply.

It's also a FREE website.

If you feel like paying, you can mosey over to Duotrope, but the Submissions Grinder is pretty much as good, and will only get better from here.

I abbreviated "Submissions" in my head, and now I desperately want its logo to be a hoagie stuffed with manuscript pages.

Oh dear. I need a signature.
And an avatar.
And probably other things I don't even know about.

I feel naked.

By the way, I have a question for anyone who might know, can you "re-enter" a submission in future quarters even though you didn't make it the first time around?... Or are we "cattle branded" with it for life?... wotf014

So long

I re-submitted one where it would have been undoubtedly recognized as being "the same picture, a second time" (if anyone were paying attention?) ... but I did add a new monster! I think that was one I sent the time I actually won. So ... assuming the same judges judged it, they didn't reject it for being a RE-submission.

(If I'm right, the Writers can re-submit stories too. The stated "Don't re-submit" is: If you got a judge's FEEDBACK on it, DON'T re-submit because that's an unfair advantage (the feedback would've HELPED you unfairly, etc)

I re-submitted because I'd always LIKED that one, and I knew I was "fixing/improving" it with my 10% new addition. But I'd have to ask myself: If some piece didn't win once, why chance it again? Try something new.

But yes: I did re-submit.

Cool-and interesting at the same time. So you actually "re-vamped" so to speak your illustration by adding a new monster to it and improving the image further.I have also gone back to past artwork that I know I was never quite happy with for one reason or another. I call them my: "re-makes" and you're right-they actually do turn out much better than the original in the end.Kind of the same thing that George Lucas did with his original Star Wars movies by going "special edition" with them. He was never quite satisfied with the original takes on Episodes 4,5 and 6 and the limited technology that he had back then ( not to mention funds too )-so he went back and gave them all a "make-over." I have experienced that when i'm completing any given artwork-although if I'm not careful-I can overkill it as well by wanting it to be too perfect-so it's really a delicate balance to get what I want-but not drag it out too far at the same time.

Hello all!

I am an aspiring scifi/fantasy writer. I have written 1 scifi novel (The Prison), a collection of sci-fi shorts (TECHs), a murder mystery (Dead Sharks), a children's book (Celesta the Magical Sky Horse), and I am presently working on a YA fantasy novel (Miles Murphy and the Ring of Truth).

I have only entered the contest once so far but plan to work hard on future entries. I'm not half bad as a writer as I did get an "Honorable Mention" in a Writer's Digest competition. (Of course, one person's good is another person's bad so I stay humble) I truly want to improve my craft and brainstorm with other like minded aspiring writers.

Thank you in advance for any help/comments/thoughts.

Hi S_C

I'll be getting a Ph.D. in Public Communication and Technology. Area of focus is Human Behavior and Technology, specifically narrative communication structure in interactive works such as video games and social media, reciprocal communication processes during video gameplay, and audience theory.

A gaming scholar, so to say. 😀

Welcome, Stephan!

That sounds like a really interesting field to be getting into, especially with the prevalence these days of Web 2.0 and online networking sites like, well, this one.

You'll fit right in!

Sounds like you're busy there but that means-among other things-that you have the chops to be a writer.

Sounds like a neat background environment for writing! Do you write about diving at all?

Hello, everyone!

I think I skipped this step. My name is Ben Jacobson (Benjamin on bylines because I have to use the name for something). I've been writing for about 5 years now. I've sold around 10 stories to smaller markets. I've been submitting to the contest off and on for about 2 years now. My record is an Honorable Mention, a rejection, a Semi-finalist and a Finalist (judgement pending). I used to spend a lot of time on Scribophile and I highly recommend it. I'm glad to have another place to talk about writing. Especially one so focused on my chosen genres. I could go on, but it gets less interesting from there.

Good to be here,

-Ben
