Congratulations on the sales! Analog is one of my "dream markets" to sell to, well done. You'll have to let us know when it is published.

Thanks. It was my first ever submission to Analog and they bought it. (In all my years of writing, I'd never subbed there because I thought I wasn't good enough.) I'm still beside myself. That story had been form rejected by about a dozen markets. It goes to show that form rejections don't necessarily mean a story sucks.

My name is Nina. I have submitted stories twice, but never written anything on a forum.

May I ask some questions here?

First of all, I'm from Russia, but I live in Argentina. Do submissions from Russians get reviewed or not?

Then, works for kids aren't allowed, but what if the main character is a teenager? Is that okay?

Lastly, is it alright to use contractions like "can't" in the stories, or should it be more formal ("cannot")?

I hope it's okay to post these questions here...

I believe others have answered your questions, so I’ll add just a little. I know we have at least another member that’s Russian, and she’s living in Russia. 😊This is an international contest, and all are welcome.

As for accepting YA stories about teenagers, the contest has published quite a few! My winner featured a story about a girl even younger, twelve. So there you go! If you’d like to read it, check out “Super-Duper Moongirl and the Amazing Moon Dawdler” in Volume 35.

I made my first submission in Q2 this year, results TBA, but only stumbled upon this forum yesterday. The grit and supportiveness of this WotF community is just fantastic, not to mention contagious! Good luck to everyone. I strongly believe that great storytelling makes the world a better place, and I'm encouraged to see so many out there honing and supporting each other in honing the craft. Hear! Hear! & welcome! If you haven't yet, check out Wulf Moon's super secrets thread. I credit them & him w/ shaving years off my path to writing a winner. The online workshop is superb, full of wisdom galore. & join some of the zoom Q&As WotF hosts w/ judges. Love, love those! One w/ Tim Powers is coming up July 7th. One last tip that I don't think is given enough. Read & study the previous volumes. Not only will it support this contest & the winners, but it'll clue you into what is winning. & new this year, the anthology is available in audiobook. How cool is that!

Hey all! Long time writer, first time submitter. Well, will be once I submit. I'm coming at this later in life, but I've been writing stories since I could write and telling stories longer. Life, including long struggles with mental illness, got in the way. But I'm feeling better than I have been in decades and started writing again a few months ago!

When I was younger I wrote mostly poetry, some short stories. Now, I've started a novel. I submitted a 1500 worder to a different competition a few weeks ago, and I'll be submitting 4600 words here tomorrow. When I started feeling better, I came across a few authors that I liked, but never knew they started in their 40s. I thought if they can do it then why can't I?

I've been a scifi and fantasy fan my entire life. My writing now is centered on fantasy. Not sure what else to say at the moment. Just happy to be here.

@undreamedages welcome! and good luck with your first submission to this competition. As to age, cliched, but it really *is* just a number. I have ten more years than you and I know there are others on the forum too who have more years than me.  Loved your webpage 😀

@undreamedages welcome and we're glad you're here! Best of luck with your submission. I'd check out the WotF online workshop-super helpful and FREE. As @gideonpsmith said, age is just a number. Wasn't Gene Wolfe in his 50s when he was first published? Same for Robert Jordan. In great company there.

Congrats on submitting. I'm with you on short stories helping with writing. They're mini-novels. 

I have two novels in the works and put them down a couple years ago to work on short stories. Writing a new short story each quarter is helping me work through holes I now realize my novels have in them. I'm slowly getting back into one of my novels now.
