Awards Ceremony Set to Honor Winners, 25th Anniversary of International L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests
Hollywood, CA—The annual awards gala honoring the winners of the 25th year of the international L. Ron Hubbard Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests for new and aspiring talent will take place in Hollywood on Saturday, August 29, it was announced by Joni Labaqui, the Contests’ director.
“Our silver anniversary will be marked by some special guests and presentations showing the global reach and impact which these contests have had on science fiction and fantasy,” Labaqui said. “Just the list of top-name writers and illustrators who have won as well as those that have judged the Contests is remarkable.”
The awards ceremony will be held at Author Services, Inc., located one block west of the world-famous Grauman’s Chinese Theatre.
In making the announcement, Labaqui added, “All 500+ winners are definitely invited to attend this year’s Awards banquet and ceremony because it will be so special.”
Acknowledged as the premiere writing contest of its kind, the Writers of the Future Contest was created in 1983 by best-selling author L. Ron Hubbard as a means for aspiring writers to have their works seen and acknowledged. The success of the original writer’s competition gave rise to the companion Illustrators of the Future Contest. As it has always been, there are no entry fees for the contests.
In addition to substantial cash awards, the contest winners and selected finalists are showcased in an annual anthology published by Galaxy Press, and are flown out to participate in an expenses-paid week-long workshop led by professional published writers and illustrators.
“The writing contest and illustrators contest have become two of the most respected in the fields of science fiction and fantasy in part because of the high level of judges involved and the talent the competitions now attract,” Labaqui said. The annual 12 top winners in each category receive the Hubbard Award, widely considered in the speculative fiction community as an honor as significant as the Hugo and Nebula Awards.
