CHICK COREA AND THE ELEKTRIC BAND JAZZ UP THE 20TH ANNUAL L. RON HUBBARD ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

The Chick Corea Elektric Band perform music from their new album To the Stars at the 20th Anniversary Achievement Awards

To set the mood for the 20th anniversary celebration of the Writers and Illustrators of the Future Awards event, Chick Corea and his world renowned Elektric Band took the audience "To the Stars" with a spectacular recital of music from their new album based on L. Ron Hubbard's science fiction masterpiece.

Chick joined luminaries from the fields of science, publishing and entertainment at the ceremonies held at the landmark Beverly Hills Hotel for the L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards.

The awards were conferred on 15 new writers and 11 new illustrators of speculative fiction, all winners of the 2003 Writers and Illustrators of the Future Contests. Also honored was world famous fantasy and science fiction author Anne McCaffrey, creator of the Dragonriders of Pern Saga and a judge of the Writers of the Future contest virtually since its outset. She was presented the coveted L. Ron Hubbard Lifetime Achievement Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Arts by Javier Ruiz, President of Author Services, Inc.

"It's really an honor, particularly considering the source. L. Ron Hubbard has been a giant in the field, and for one giant to nod to me makes me feel bigger too."
— Anne McCaffrey

Capping the ceremonies was the awarding of Hubbard Gold Award Grand Prizes—including $4,000 in cash--to the top winners in each contest. Receiving the Grand Prize for the 2003 "Story of the Year" was William Katz of Arlington, Virginia, while the Illustrator of the Year Prize went to Laura Diehl of Grottoes, Virginia.

AUTHOR ROBERT J. SAWYER JOINS WRITERS' CONTEST PANEL OF JUDGES

New Writers of the Future judge Robert J. Sawyer participates in 2004 awards ceremony

Hugo and Nebula Award winning science fiction novelist, Robert J. Sawyer, has been named as a judge for the L. Ron Hubbard's Writers of the Future Contest.

Sawyer, a Canadian-born Toronto resident, is the only holder of top science fiction awards in five different countries (U.S., Japan, Spain, France and Canada). His novel, Hominids, was named the 2003 Hugo Award winner. In 1995, Sawyer's The Terminal Experiment received the prestigious Nebula Award, given Science Fiction Writers of America, as best novel of the year. In addition, Sawyer serves as a frequent guest commentator for various shows on the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation.

As a fledging writer, Robert entered the contest three times. Although he never won, he has his own unique story on how the contest launched his career. "I received a rather long letter from Algis Budrys, the editor of L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future in response to one of my submissions, where he recommended several points that I correct in my story," notes Robert. "I made these edits, changed it from a short story to a novel and wound up with my first novel sale—it was called Golden Fleece (1990). It unfortunately disqualified me for the Contest as I was now a published novelist, but it did leave me with a personal conviction of the value of the Contest."
