May 2007

Dear Writers and Illustrators of the Future Associates,

Writers of the Future launched in 1984 after L. Ron Hubbard instructed the staff of his literary agency, Author Services, Inc. to establish a contest for new writers to get their careers started in this highly competitive field. After 23 years we are proud to inform you that the contest has discovered scores of winners who have become either New York Times or national bestselling authors and hundreds of professional writers.

To name a few: Kevin J. Anderson, Sean Williams, Dean Wesley Smith, Dave Wolverton, Robert J. Sawyer, Jo Beverly, Nancy Farmer, Karen Joy Fowler, James Alan Gardner, Stephen Baxter, Robert Reed, K.D. Wentworth and Nina Kiriki Hoffman.

Over 30 million books have been sold by our winners and contestants. This newsletter has been established to keep you informed of the successes of our winners and on the contest in general. In the coming months we will be covering topics that you, our contestants, former winners, aspiring writers or illustrators, have requested or that we feel will be of interest to you. We invite your comments at any time and in fact, look forward to them.

1) Patrick Rothfuss and Nathan Taylor team up on Patrick’s first fantasy novel THE NAME OF THE WIND

When Patrick Rothfuss entered a small portion of his first novel in the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest under the title of The Road to Levenshir, in 2001 he had no idea that it would lead to the selling of his entire 3 novel universe to DAW books 4 years later.

Patrick Rothfuss has gained critical acclaim for his first fantasy novel to hit the marketplace in March of this year. The critics are raving. Here are just a few examples of what is out there right now:

“The powerful debut novel from fantasy’s next superstar. A high-action story written with a poet’s hand, THE NAME OF THE WIND is a masterpiece that will transport readers into the body and mind of a wizard.” – Borders

“This fast-moving, vivid, and unpretentious debut roots its coming-of-age fantasy in convincing mythology.” – Polly Shulman, Entertainment Weekly

"THE NAME OF THE WIND is the mountaintop for fantasy work so far this year. All other novels, especially first ones, will have an extremely difficult time in finding a way out of the shadow of this extraordinary tome. Rothfuss has sent up major flares that will serve as a warning to the big names like Martin, Goodkind and Jordan. Whether you are a reader of fantasy or simply a lover of a great story, you owe it to yourself to take up THE NAME OF THE WIND and spend some time with brilliance." – Stephen Hubbard, Bookreporter.com

Since Patrick stepped out of the week long workshop which is an intensive study of “how to write,” based on several articles by L. Ron Hubbard and under the tutelage of the contest judges, Patrick has been promoting Writers of the Future, and the Illustrators of the Future contest as well.

Patrick met an artist by the name of Nathan Taylor at Washington State University right about the time he entered the contest. They fast became friends and Patrick then encouraged Nathan Taylor to enter the Illustrators of the Future contest.

Nathan entered twice and his second time around won the contest.

Patrick asked Nathan to draw the map that appears in the beginning of THE NAME OF THE WIND. The map assists readers to enter the universe that Patrick has created.
So we now have our first COLLABORATION of writer and illustrator winners from the contest.

We are sure this will not be the last.

2) TIPS FOR ENTRANTS
Just a few tips for you to ensure your entry sails right through the administrative process and into the hands of the initial judge.

FOR WRITERS

2.1 Read the rules and follow them carefully. Every single one of them.

2.2 Do not staple your manuscript or put it in fancy packaging. You will never see your fancy packaging again.

2.3 Always include a cover sheet with ALL of your contact information including e-mail. If you move or change your e-mail address let us know. We like having our records up-to-date.

2.4 Avoid trite titles. Be original.

FOR ILLUSTRATORS

2.5 Put the title of your drawing on the back of your artwork.

2.6 You only need to send 1 cover sheet for all three pieces of art that you submit but ensure you include all three titles of your artwork on that one piece of paper. And don’t forget to include ALL of your contact information.

3) WRITERS OF THE FUTURE VOLUME XXII IS AVAILABLE IN WALMART ACROSS THE US!

For the first time in the contest's history, the volume is not only available at Amazon.com or your local bookstore but also being sold at Walmart!! Pick up a copy!
