Carl Frederick of Ithaca, New York won First Place in the 3rd Quarter 2002
Writers’ Contest.
Carl was previously a published finalist in the 2001 Contest and his story “The Art of Creation” appears in Writers of the Future Vol. XVIII.
He had this to say about his experiences:
“The news of my first place win in the L. Ron Hubbard writers contest struck me like a bolt of lightning. I was shocked, thrilled, ecstatically charged. Indeed, since I was a “published finalist” in last year’s contest, it was more like lightning striking twice. So, I know from personal experience now, the consequences of this stroke of good fortune.
“A good showing in the Writers of the Future©
Contest is a validation: an affirmation that some of the finest writers of science fiction and fantasy believe that the story you submitted was pretty good. Yes, a win means an expense-paid trip to the pinnacle of writers workshops and a story-book awards
ceremony (view the awards ceremony here).
And yes, the mention of winning the contest is likely to move a submission out of the slush-pile. But for me, most important was the welcoming: the genuinely warm people who administer the
Writers of the Future© helping me get my nascent writing career off the ground, the camaraderie of some of my genre writing heroes, and the shared experiences with my workshop classmates (whom I’m sure I’ll regard as family for the rest of my life).
"In short, if you are eligible to enter the contest, I urge you to do so. And may lightning illuminate your way.”
| ALGIS BUDRYS PASSES HAT OF COORDINATING JUDGE OF WRITERS CONTEST TO K.D. WENTWORTH
|
 |
 |
Algis Budrys has turned over his position of Coordinating Judge of the Writers Contest to K.D. Wentworth. A former winner in the 1988 contest year, K.D. became a judge in 1999 and has worked closely with Algis over the past year performing the duties of First Reader for the Contest.
“I’m very pleased to take on this additional
role," said K.D. “I’m a big believer in the Contest. It gave a
major boost to my career. I’m really happy to give something back to the Contest and help talented new writers get their start.”
Algis continues as a judge in the Contest and as the editor of the
L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers of the Future anthology series.
“K.D. is ideally suited to be the Coordinating Judge of the Contest,” said Algis. “As a former winner, judge and first reader, she knows every aspect of how the contest works. It has been my hope for several years that she would accept this position and I am very pleased to be putting it in her capable hands.”
K.D. has been busy with her own writing as well and has three new books coming out soon including
This Fair Land and Moonchild (third in the House of Moons
series) from Hawk Publishing Group and
The Course of Empire, co-written with Eric Flint, from Baen Books. (For more information about K.D. Wentworth see
www.kdwentworth.com.)
| THE WRITERS CONTEST WELCOMES BRIAN HERBERT TO THE JUDGES PANEL |
 |
Brian Herbert, co-author of the best selling Dune “prequel” novels, has joined the writers’ panel of judges.
“I’m honored to become part of so eminent a group of authors—among the best in the field—who have gone out of their way to help new writers get their literary bearings and gain professional
recognition. I remember how much my father enjoyed being a judge in this contest and have seen, over the years, how the winners have gone on to publish their own novels and take their rightful place in this exciting field of literature.”
In addition to The Butlerian Jihad, currently a
New York Times bestseller, Mr. Herbert has co-authored three other
Dune prequel novels with best-selling author and and
Writers of the Future Contest fellow judge, Kevin J. Anderson. Among Herbert’s own published works are the novels
Sidney’s Comet; Sudanna, Sudanna; and
The Race for God. He co-wrote Man of Two Worlds with his father. His biography of Frank Herbert entitled,
Dreamer of Dune, will be released by Tor Books in March 2003. His book about the U.S. Merchant Marine,
Forgotten Heroes, will also be published by Tor in 2003. (For more information about Brian Herbert see
www.dunenovels.com.)
Frank Herbert, author of the original Dune novels and father of Brian Herbert, was a judge of the contest until his untimely death in 1986.
