| After
the Awards by Steve Savile, 2002 Writers of the
Future Contest Winner |
 |
All in all it has been an amazing twelve months since
I won the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest.
I really credit the contest with making a large difference
for me in terms of both being taken seriously as a writer
and me taking myself seriously.
Since
winning the contest I have sold a novelization of my
winning story, have seen my first foreign language novel
released in my native Sweden and have sold a new short
story collection to an exciting independent press in
the United Kingdom. It is a strangely odd and wonderful
feeling seeing my words interpreted in my second language
with the Swedish novel release and again a translation
of the short story collection has been picked up by
Aleph Bokforlag in Sweden.
I have delivered my first full length fantasy novel
to my agent—a project which had ground to a halt
before I regained impetus from listening to Tim Powers
and K.D. Wentworth in the invaluable Writing Workshop
and from hanging around with so many likeminded folks.
I am currently working on a new project with fellow
2002 winner, Jay Lake, who is just the most amazing
writer with which to collaborate.
The biggest thing I got from winning the contest—aside
from the money, the trip to Hollywood, the new friends,
hugging actress Jillian McWhirter on stage, being petrified
in the presence of Robert Silverberg and Chick Corea,
standing on stage in front of a veritable who’s who
of the SF fraternity, chewing the fat with Kevin J.
Anderson and Sean Williams, being inspired by Tim Powers
daily, and the extra inch on the waistline from those
American breakfasts—was self belief. Not the arrogant
I-Can-Conquer-The-World self belief, but the very humble
I-Put-Some-Words-Together-And-Made-Something-Worthwhile
self belief that has seen fan mail arrive in my mailbox
from the US, Finland, and as far afield as Australia
over the last two months. These are all feelings and
experiences that can never be replaced. So, thank you,
everyone involved. Thank you.

more closely acquainted with Ron. We met a few times
in person, the first being in Astounding editor
John W. Campbell's office. But I know this—he was a
gentleman as well as a literary force, with the capacity
to make an acquaintance feel important and a friend
seem cherished.
"I saw Ron in action a few times in Campbell's
office. He seemed to be always ready to help any struggling
young writer and once I actually clocked one of these
discussions at thirty-seven minutes!" — Frank Kelly Freas
