In August, the 19th Annual L. Ron Hubbard Achievement Awards ceremony was held at the famous Beverly Hills Hotel to honor the best new creative talent in the fields of science fiction and fantasy.
Actors David Carradine, Jason Lee and a roster of best-selling
authors—including Frederik Pohl, Robert
Silverberg, Kevin J. Anderson, Jerry Pournelle and Tim
Powers—topped the list of presenters. Attendees also enjoyed a dazzling performance by multi-Grammy Award winning jazz great Chick Corea, vocalist Gayle Moran Corea and Grammy winning and Academy Award nominated composer and musician Mark
Isham.
The ceremony was capped by the presentation of the Hubbard Gold Award to the grand prize winners in each contest. Receiving the grand prize for "Story of the Year" was Matthew Candelaria of Lawrence, Kansas. The "Illustrator of the Year" prize went to Mike Lawrence of Eugene, Oregon. The L. Ron Hubbard Lifetime Achievement Award for Contributions to the Arts was presented to science fiction author and Writers of the Future judge Robert

TRIBUTE TO HAL CLEMENT
BY K.D WENTWORTH |
 |
I was greatly saddened by the loss of Hal Clement, one of our Writers of the Future judges. He was a sweet, generous, immensely talented man who gave freely of his time to fans and aspiring writers alike. He loved to tell stories and spent the last few years traveling to conventions all over the country, often at his own expense, speaking and presenting wonderful hard science slide shows.
He was at the Writers of the Future Awards in L.A. in August, and I just saw him the weekend before he
passed away when he sat on the Writers of the Future panel at MileHiCon in Denver. He seemed well and happy and I’m glad he was able to go on doing the things he loved up to the end of his life. It was a privilege to know him and a great joy to work with him. He will be missed by professionals and fans alike.

RON HUBBARD GOLD AWARD WINNING WRITER, SCOTT NICHOLSON |
 |
I can still remember the night I got a telephone call from
the L. Ron Hubbard Writers of the Future Contest. I was upstairs, pecking away at an old Brother word processor whose letter t’s on the expensive print wheels had a habit of breaking. My wife told me some stranger was on the phone and, for once, this person didn’t sound like he wanted to sell me something.
The long and the short of the conversation was that
they liked my story “Metabolism,” and though it was only a finalist in the contest
rather than an award winner, it was going to be
included in the annual anthology. I learned I would receive $500.00 in publication money and be flown to the Writers of the Future writing workshop in Los Angeles, put up for free in a historic Hollywood hotel, and be fed a number of lavish meals. Money, workshop, and my story in a real book featuring some of the best new speculative fiction writers in the world. No strings attached.
It was my first ever story sale. I had compiled a mere 105 rejection slips to that point, and have since gone on to garner 400 or so more. But that night forever changed the course of my writing career. While I’m pretty sure I would have persisted in this game, and eventually broken though to some level of success, that bit of encouragement and validation made all those lonely nights at the keyboard worthwhile.
I reentered the Writers of the Future Contest as I was still eligible, having garnered only one professional short story
publication to date. The next year, I was fortunate enough to win First Place in my quarter and went on to win the Grand Prize, the L. Ron Hubbard Gold Award. Since then I have published 40 short stories and two novels. Over that time, my appreciation has grown for the
Contest’s importance in nurturing new writers. I’m not “new” anymore, but I will always be proud to call myself a Writer of the Future.
