GRAND MASTER OF SCIENCE FICTION: Jack Williamson helps a new generation of writers by serving as a judge in the Writers of the Future Contest. He is shown here presenting an award to a winner.

From his earliest years as a professional writer, Ron helped other writers develop their talents by sharing his own experiences and the knowledge which he accumulated while becoming a top pro. For that reason, and many others, the L. Ron Hubbard Writers’ Workshop is a special, and especially popular, part of the Writers of the Future program.

Magazine articles LRH authored in those early years for Writers’ Digest, Writer’s Review, The Author & Journalist and Writers’ Markets & Methods are still used today as the basis of the Writers’ Workshop. They not only present the basic skills of story writing and guidelines for developing technique, they are also encouraging because of their insight into the aspiring writer’s situation.

SUCH PRESTIGIOUS VENUES AS THE UNITED NATIONS have hosted the Writers of the Future annual awards ceremonies.

The workshop is conducted by the judges of the Writers of the Future Contest, led by the Coordinating Judge. Other professionals including publishers, editors and literary agents are often invited to share their views with participants and answer their questions as well. The workshop is normally five days long and serves as a prelude to the awards event. It has been staged in places such as Taos, New Mexico; Sag Harbor, New York; Pepperdine University; the George Washington University and the Library of Congress.

Bronwynn Elko, a Writers of the Future Award winner who attended the workshop in 1991, speaks highly of how it helped her: “The L. Ron Hubbard Writers’ Workshop has altered my perceptions of the art of storytelling, expanded my literary frontiers, and most importantly, has deepened my ability to act on my dreams.” Award-winning author Orson Scott Card was even more emphatic: “What astonished me was how much more was accomplished in only a few short days than most workshops accomplish in weeks or months or even years.”

As acclaim for the workshop has spread, novice writers and creative writing instructors around the world clamored for these same writing materials to be made widely available. This has resulted in workshops for the public being held in such prestigious venues as Harvard, DePaul, Duke and Brigham Young Universities, and even the Charles Dickens House in London.
