WRITING WORKSHOP

   I
t is a matter of record that from his earliest years as a professional writer, L. Ron Hubbard helped other writers develop their talents. It is not surprising that the magazine articles he authored in those early years for Writer’s Digest, Writer’s Review, The Author & Journalist and Writers’ Markets & Methods, are still used today in workshops to teach the basic skills of story writing because they are both encouraging and understanding of the aspiring writer’s plight, as well as accurate in their statement of techniques. They are the basis of the L. Ron Hubbard Writing Workshop.

Instructed from the outset by author/editor Algis Budrys, the first of these workshops was held in May, 1986 in Taos, New Mexico, open to the 1985 Contest-awarded writers only. The assistant instructors included Jack Williamson, Gene Wolfe and Frederik Pohl. Succeeding invitational writing workshops have been held at Sag Harbor, New York; Pepperdine University, Malibu, California; Boulder City, Nevada; California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, California; The George Washington University, and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; and the L. Ron Hubbard
Library, Hollywood, California. Other assistant instructors have included Orson Scott Card, Tim Powers and Dave Wolverton.
