The first story in this year's L. Ron Hubbard Presents Writers
of the Future Volume 22 is by Blake Hutchins, a one-time
public defender, firefighter, computer-game designer and teacher
who is now writing full-time. His story, The Sword from
the Sea, marks the launch of his professional career. After
having spent a rigorous week at the Writers of the Future workshop
in Carlsbad, California, topped off by a black-tie Achievement
Awards gala at San Diego's Air & Space Museum, he had this
